Look! Up in the Sky! It's Garden Girl!

Faster than a speeding daddylonglegs! More powerful than a weed-whacker! Able to leap tall weeds in a single bound (at least, I think they're weeds)!

Armed only with a trowel, cultivator, floppy cotton hat and extra-large bottle of sunscreen, she does battle with weeds (again, I think they're weeds!), stones (where DO they all come from?), and a colony of ants that was Not Amused at being dug up!

*whew!* Okay, enough of *that* metaphor...

Seriously, I did an hour & a half of weeding this afternoon, and it was really kinda satisfying. My hamstrings are killing me & I've discovered muscles in my shoulders I never knew I had, but still. I hope to get enough of the veggie patch cleared out to plant basil, oregano & spinach this weekend. Why spinach? Somebody gave us a packet of seeds. I've never planted spinach before (actually, I've never planted *anything* before). Dad tried lettuce one year & the dog ate it. I figure the worst that can happen is it won't grow.

Er - spinach isn't one of those plants that takes over the entire garden, is it?

And once that's done, I've got to finish weeding the rest of the yard. We've got about a third of an acre, and over the years, Dad dug up more & more lawn and put in beds of flowers, bushes, trees...all part of his Fiendishly Clever Plot to have to mow as little lawn as possible. In fact, my cousin Keith came to visit last week after about 10 years, and almost the first thing he said was "Whoa, where's all the grass?!" The problem with this is that:

A., All of these beds require weeding, and
B., I have no flipping idea what half of this stuff IS. At this point, I'm not sure Dad even does, either. I've a feeling we may end up digging some of it out. Or killing it. Or both.

Go, you! I'd like to do exactly that: dig up the lawn & plant flowers & flowering shrubs everywhere. There was a story in the paper here a week or so ago about a local woman who did it because she hates mowing. I don't actually do the mowing around here, but beds of perennials would be much nicer to look at than the dandelions that have taken over.

Oh, and the spinach won't take over the garden, AFAIK. ;-)

Well, I don't do the mowing, either, but at least I know what grass looks like. ;-)

And that's nice to know about the spinach. :-)

Not a bad idea, actually. Thanks!
