Holiday musings

Last night I told my brother I was planning to put the Christmas tree up today. His response? "Bit early for you, isn't it?"

I need a holiday icon.

I am apparently a very dangerous person to take to Toys 'R Us. Mom & I went a few days ago to get presents for the younger cousins (us old folks don't exchange gifts any more, but we still give the kids stuff ... what a racket!). Thanks mostly to me, we came away with some very cool stuff ("'Big Bucket O' Dinos!' We have to get this!!!"). Thanks mostly to some reserves of willpower I never knew I had (and some very weird looks from my mother), I managed not to come away with a Marvel Comics Nick Fury bobblehead action figure. But it was close. I think possibly this newfound love of comics is getting out of hand ....

Time for another "my job would be awesome if it weren't for the people" post

Seriously. I work 10 minutes from my house, surrounded by books, with unlimited free internet access. What more could a girl ask for? Well....

My first day back @ work after a great 3 days off began with a call from one of my chronic nutjobs. She needed to scan a picture & e-mail it to someone; if she brought her printer/scanner & laptop in to the library, could I show her how to do it?

*facepalms* Um, no. I am not conversant with every piece of technology out there, and there's no guarantee that after you hauled your gear into the library & set it up, that I'd actually know how to use it. That's what instruction manuals and "Dummies" books are for. There's also the little matter of the last time you brought your laptop in & asked for help, then proceeded to ignore everything I suggested.

Which leads me to a tangential rant: if I ever find out which of the circulation staff is touting me as the "computer genius" on staff, I'm going to strangle them with a USB cable. Seriously. Chronic Nutjob actually started the phone call with "Ohhh, you're the one they told me was the computer genius!" I'm about as good with tech as the average librarian these days, but I'm by no means a "genius." (Or Genius, for my fellow Mac people.) Being described as one would be flattering if it weren't for the fact that patrons now expect me to be able to solve every possible computer problem, and get mad at me when I can't. Like it's my fault they don't even know what OS they're running.

Anyway.

After lunch, there was the gent who needed a cookbook but had the title wrong. I found it for him anyway, as I do, and mixed in with the thanks got the beginnings of a lecture on Why We Should All Be Vegans, and how the Evils of Meat should be taught in high school. Which, thankfully, I managed to squash (no pun intended) in a hurry by spotting another patron who looked like she might possibly need directions to the water fountain. Otherwise I might've been tempted to describe, in loving detail, the lunch mitchy & I had at Virgil's BBQ yesterday.

Best part of the whole day (for unusual values of "best")? Call from a circulation clerk downstairs, asking timidly if we should put up a sign warning people about the acorns.

Acorns??

Um, yes. One man (possibly my proselytizing vegan) came in complaining that the acorns were falling rather violently. His words. And a woman complained that her car had been dented by one, and she would be contacting her insurance company. So, should we put up a sign? Cue several seconds of deep breathing, followed by my saying, as politely as possible, that no, I didn't think we needed a sign to remind people that acorns do occasionally fall on windy September days in New York. What we need, I added to myself, was not more signs but smarter patrons. Or patrons who would read the damn signs in the first place.

Watch the car lady sue us now, although how she'd ever prove it was one of our acorns, I've no idea.

Tennis thoughts

So, Rafael Nadal got his arse kicked in straight sets today , and totally neglected to threaten the linesman. Tsk.

Poor John McEnroe. Everybody keeps looking at him like it's his fault.

You know those post-match, on-court interviews they do? "So, Joe Schmo, you just went down 6-0 in straight sets to somebody nobody's ever heard of before. WTF happened?" I'm just waiting for someone to reply, "Well, I dunno, I just really sucked today."
I'd turn it in. And, in fact, this has happened to me & this is what I've done.
