...you didn't expect that to make sense, did you?!

Anyway, I don't make New Year's resolutions any more, because I never keep them. But I've been wanting for some time to keep better track of the books I read, and this seems like as good a time as any to start. It's just the neatness factor, don'tcha know. ;-)

The first book I finished this year (note to self: post this to RAM, since it's actually on-topic!) was Donna Leon's A Venetian Reckoning, aka ... er, something else in the U.S. Rather annoying, those title changes. Leon's books are by no means cozy, despite their setting in "romantic" Venice. I think that's part of the point - that there's a real live modern city under all the tourist trappings, with the same problems as any other city. I don't usually read police procedurals, and I rarely read non-cozies, but I like Leon's books. this one really brought home the old debate about violence on the page vs. violence on the screen, and which is more - I don't want to say "effective," but that's the closest word I can think of. To me, if I see someone being "murdered" on TV, sure, it's scary, but I know the actor got up off the floor at the end of the scene & went home. But reading it on the page - it *stays* there in my head, even though I know I'm reading fiction, and it's still there after I close the book. I won't give away spoilers for "Venetian Reckoning," but after I'd finished the scene about the videotape, I wanted to stand there screaming like Chiara did. I've got the next book in the series on my TBR, but I think I'll leave it for a while. I need a few cozier books now.

On a lighter note, I went into the post office after lunch today, and while I was waiting in line, a radio in the back was blasting out the Commitments' version of "Mustang Sally." It cost me quite a bit of effort not to start boogie-ing in place!

(Note to self: find Commitments soundtrack!)

You should totally have boogied in the Post Office! You know the footage would end up on the internet by the end of the day. You'd be famous! :)

Maybe that's what I was afraid of! ;-)
